Panther Robotics Hosts & Wins first Indiana In the Zone Tournament of the Year

On Saturday, October 28, 30 teams from around the state attended the VEX In the Zone State Qualifier Tournament hosted by Panther Robotics in Clowes Commons. Electricity was in the air as middle and high school students put their best foot forward to compete in the In the Zone Game.

Panther Robotics had perhaps its best day ever, with all 4 participating teams selected to an alliance for the Elimination Rounds:

  • Team 6842Z "PigPen" (Zach Phelps, Humza Raza, Catherine Niculescu, Edward Hu) dominated the tournament, going 7-0 in the Qualifying Round and entering the Elimination Round as the #1 seed. Joining them was Team 6842W "War Dogs" (Andrew Polak, Taban Kahre, Sullivan Watson, Sophie Davison) and their friends from Covenant Christian High School. Ultimately they prevailed over the best teams in Indiana to be crowned Tournament Champions.

  • Team 6842B "The Borg" (Thomas Allen, Aakrit Mehrotra, Jathan Pai, Alex Ward) had an exciting end to their day, after going 2-5 and earning the #20 spot, they were selected to join a very strong #2 alliance with Triton Central and Trinity Lutheran teams. They finished as the Tournament Runners-Up.

  • Team 6842C "Cobra Kai" (Alexander Boeckmann, Tucker Hoskins, Daniel de Dios, Sragvee Atluri) went 5-2 and finished in the #10 spot. This is a very impressive showing for a rookie team. They were selected to the #6 alliance and made it to the semifinals.

  • PigPen also won the Skills Championship, scoring the #1 Drivers Skills score in the world and ranking the team #4 in the world overall for skills.

Congratulations to Panther Robotics on a truly outstanding start to the 2017-2018 VEX Robotics season! The students, coaches and mentors want to again thank all the volunteers who gave their time to make this such a great event.
